Professional Development with KBEP
In February, the Katie Brown Educational Program had the opportunity to present two professional development workshops to community leaders and sexual assault advocates.
On Tuesday February 21st, we presented a webinar called Sexual Violence in Black Communities. The webinar was hosted through the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services. Over 100 participants joined the webinar to learn more about how racism impacts Black experiences with sexual violence, and recommendations for best practices in sexual violence prevention and response with Black communities. We would like to thank FRIS for reaching out to us to host this webinar.
The following week on February 28th, KBEP facilitated a new professional development workshop called Community Relations and Allyship. This training was presented at the School-Community Partnership. The School-Community Partnership is a Fall River-based coalition of community members who work with young people in different capacities. Some of the members include teachers, social workers, school adjustment counselors, and police officers. These concerned adults meet monthly to discuss ways that we can work together to strengthen the Fall River community and prevent risky behaviours among its youth. The Community Relations and Allyship training uses the Socioecological Model as a framework for understanding oppression, and elucidates the ways that commonly used rhetoric and language can strain community relations. Thank you to the coordinators of the School-Community Partnership for inviting us to facilitate the training, and thank you to David Weed of the Greater Fall River Partners for a Healthier Community, Inc. for taking pictures and video of the workshop.
These workshops are an example of the workshops we offer. Our workshops can be customized to best suit the needs of your group! To learn more about the professional development workshops that KBEP offers, please visit our website.
