Consent Awareness Pledge
Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year. One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence. During Prom Season, the Katie Brown Education Program partners with local businesses and area high schools to bring awareness of the issue of dating violence among teens.
Recognizing that Prom Season presents a timely opportunity to remind young people about the characteristics of healthy respectful relationships and how to avoid unhealthy ones, KBEP, through the Consent Awareness Pledge (formally the Prom Promise Campaign) encourages students topledge to promote respectful dating relationships. Students who take the pledge are given a booklet with information on resources and coupons for discounts at area salons, florists and limo services.
This year, students at B.M.C. Durfee High School, Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School and Taunton High School will take the Pledge.
